An organization has several departments and each department has different processes to follow. All these processes are interconnected to make the final product. Each process has to be monitored because a slightest of the error can create hassles for the entire production. Total Productive Maintenance is the process which maintains and improves the quality of machines, equipment, employees, processes and so on to add value to the final results.

TPM - Total Productive Maintenance and its principles:

Total Productive Maintenance aims at improving the productivity of plants and equipment with least maintenance expenses and better production results. The quality management system consists of Total quality management and Total productive maintenance systems. The production of a company hugely depends upon the machineries and equipment. Any fault with the machines and tools will not only spoil the quality of the work, but will also be more time consuming. TPM addresses to these issues and ensures that the quality of the work is not affected.

Principles of TPM:
To improve the quality of the work, there are 8 pillars of TPM. Here are they:
It ensures that there is focussed improvement. Many a times there is deviation from the work and the steps taken also do not touch the core task. Hence, this is a process which directly hits the problem area.
Autonomous maintenance is possible in this.
You no longer have to hurry up to do things at the last minute. There is planned maintenance involved.
Quality maintenance is the strength of the Total Productive Maintenance process.

Cost deployment is involved. The entire process will be budget covered and there will not be any wastage of money. Finance is very crucial at every stage and an organization that runs at higher level must consider this important factor.

Early Equipment Management ensures that the tools and techniques are used to the core. Most of the time is wasted in moving the tools and equipment.

Training and education is the base of every organization. Till the employees are trained in every process, no work can be effective.

A safety health environment must be provided to all the employees, irrespective of the process. This will give them a confidence to work without any fear.

Optimal implementation of TPM paves way to increased plant productivity while the investment on maintenance stay minimal. There are many advantages of adopting this technique or strategy. However, if you haven’t used it, it is high time you go to reap the benefits of this quality management process.
